Our science

The WITHIN standard

Not all dog food is made equal. Here's why ours is different.

WITHIN is built around a single principle: proper science, properly applied. Every product in the range is manufactured to British Retail Consortium (BRC) standards, vet approved through an 11-point clinical framework, and formulated with FormulaBiotics™ our proprietary blend of prebiotics, postbiotics, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. This is what that actually means.

FormulaBiotics: The science behind every recipe

FormulaBiotics™ is Within's proprietary nutritional complex, present in every product we make — from wet food trays to supplement chews. It's not a marketing label. It's a specific, documented blend of four active nutritional components that work together to support a dog's gut microbiome, immune function, and long-term vitality.

The four components are:

Prebiotics — dietary fibres that feed beneficial bacteria already present in the gut. Prebiotics act as fuel for the microbiome, helping to maintain the balance of beneficial versus harmful bacteria. Within uses established prebiotic sources including chicory root extract (a source of FOS — fructooligosaccharides) and Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS), both of which have documented efficacy in supporting gut flora stability.

Postbiotics — the bioactive compounds produced when beneficial bacteria ferment prebiotics. Within uses a clinically studied postbiotic derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation. Postbiotics have been the subject of growing peer-reviewed research demonstrating their role in immune modulation and intestinal barrier function.

Antioxidants — compounds that neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. Within's formulas include natural antioxidant sources that help support cellular health, coat condition, and immune resilience over the long term.

Vitamins & Minerals — a full micronutrient profile formulated to meet FEDIAF nutritional guidelines for adult and senior dogs. This includes Vitamin A for immune function, Vitamin D3 for calcium metabolism, Vitamin E as a chain-breaking antioxidant, and a comprehensive mineral profile including zinc, iron, copper, manganese, and selenium — all provided as highly bioavailable chelated forms where appropriate.

Together, these four pillars deliver what no single ingredient can — systemic nutritional support from the gut outward. A healthy microbiome supports immunity. Immune function supports vitality. Vitality supports everything else.

Vet Approved: The 11-point clinical framework

Every Within recipe is reviewed and approved by a qualified veterinary surgeon through a structured 11-point clinical framework. This is not a rubber stamp on the finished label. It is a documented review process applied to every product before it carries the Within name.

The 11 points cover:

  1. Provenance of Ingredients — every ingredient is assessed for traceability, ethical sourcing, and compliance with both EU and UK food safety standards. Supplier certifications are verified. FEDIAF nutritional guidelines are applied at the ingredient level.
  2. Manufacturing Process — facilities must hold BRC (British Retail Consortium) certification. All production lines are subject to HACCP controls. Full batch traceability is maintained.
  3. Testing & Nutritional Analysis — ingredients are tested on arrival at the factory, not just the finished product. Third-party laboratory analysis confirms the recipe meets declared nutritional values.
  4. Certification & Compliance — all products comply with UK and EU pet food regulations. All claims on packaging are substantiated.
  5. FEDIAF Membership & Guidelines — Within observes FEDIAF's comprehensive nutritional guidelines in full. FEDIAF (Federation Européenne de l'Industrie des Aliments pour Animaux Familiers) represents the European gold standard for pet food formulation.
  6. Labelling & Claims — every claim on every label is reviewed and signed off. Nothing is stated that cannot be substantiated.
  7. Packaging & Storage — materials are assessed for food safety. Storage and transit requirements are specified.
  8. Post-Manufacture Monitoring — ongoing random batch testing continues after products reach market.
  9. Record Keeping & Reporting — full auditability is maintained throughout the supply chain.
  10. Ethical & Welfare Standards — supplier welfare benchmarks must be met or exceeded at every point in the chain.
  11. Sale & Distribution — supply chain integrity from factory gate to your dog's bowl.

No product launches without clearing all 11.

UK Manufacturing to BRC Standards

All Within products are manufactured in the United Kingdom, in BRC-certified facilities. BRC (British Retail Consortium) Global Standards is one of the most respected food safety and quality certification frameworks in the world. Achieving and maintaining BRC accreditation requires documented quality management systems, rigorous HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) controls, regular unannounced audits, and full traceability at every stage of production.

For dog food, this matters for several reasons. BRC certification means:

  • Facilities are subject to independent third-party audits — not self-assessment
  • Every production run is traceable from raw ingredient to finished product
  • Any quality issue can be isolated and acted on rapidly
  • Standards are reviewed and renewed, not awarded once and forgotten

Within does not use contract manufacturing at non-certified sites. Every product — wet food trays, dry food kibble, and supplement chews — is produced under the same certified umbrella. Manufacturing in the UK also means shorter supply chains, lower ingredient transit times, and reduced risk of quality degradation before production begins.

UK manufacturing is not a marketing point for Within. It's a quality control decision.

Named Whole Meat: Never Meal, Never Anonymous Protein

Within wet food contains a minimum of 70% named meat or fish. The species is declared on the label and matched to the product name — chicken is chicken, turkey is turkey, salmon is salmon. There is no animal derivatives catch-all. There is no anonymous "meat and animal by-products" category.

Within does not use meat meal in any product. Meat meal is a rendered, dried, and powdered derivative of animal tissue. It is shelf-stable, cheap, and has a higher crude protein reading on paper — but the protein quality is substantially lower than that from fresh or freshly prepared meat, and the processing required to produce it degrades key amino acids and micronutrients.

Within wet food uses:

  • Freshly Prepared Meat / Fish — high-moisture, whole-muscle protein. The ingredient as close to its natural state as practical within the production process.
  • No rendered meal — at any stage, in any recipe

Dry food contains 26% freshly prepared chicken or salmon in addition to whole oats, potato protein, and pea protein. The oat base provides a gentler carbohydrate profile than corn or wheat-based kibble, with better digestibility characteristics for many dogs.

For dogs with sensitivities, the named species approach makes identifying potential triggers straightforward. For dogs without sensitivities, it means consistent, traceable nutrition in every bowl.

Grain Free Wet Food & the Role of Oats in Dry Food

Within wet food is grain free. Dogs' digestive systems are not optimised for grain — particularly highly processed grain like corn starch, wheat flour, or rice derivatives, which are frequently used in wet food as cheap binders and bulking agents. Removing grain from the wet food range allows the recipe to prioritise meat and functional ingredients at higher inclusion rates.

Grain free does not mean carbohydrate free. Within wet food uses sweet potato, potato, and dried peas as digestible carbohydrate sources — ingredients that also provide dietary fibre to support healthy gut transit.

Within dry food takes a different position. Dry kibble requires a starchy matrix to bind the extrusion process. The question is which starch, and at what quality. Within uses whole oats as the primary carbohydrate base in dry food. Oats are a lower glycaemic index grain relative to corn or wheat, provide soluble and insoluble fibre, and have a well-documented digestibility profile in dogs. The result is a kibble that sustains energy levels more evenly and supports gut health rather than working against it.

Oat-based dry food is also increasingly associated with reduced stool volume and improved stool quality in dogs — a practical signal that the food is being efficiently digested and the nutrients are being absorbed.

FEDIAF Compliance: The European Gold Standard

FEDIAF — the Federation Européenne de l'Industrie des Aliments pour Animaux Familiers — is the authoritative body for pet food nutrition standards in Europe. FEDIAF's nutritional guidelines define the minimum and maximum nutrient levels required for pet food to be declared complete and balanced for a given life stage.

Within wet food is formulated to meet FEDIAF complete food standards for adult and senior dogs. This means:

  • Every essential amino acid is present at or above the minimum requirement
  • The full micronutrient profile — vitamins, minerals, trace elements — is present at levels appropriate for the life stage
  • Energy density is within the appropriate range for the declared feeding guide
  • No nutrient is present at a level that creates toxicity risk

Complete and balanced is a significant claim. Many products on the market are complementary foods — suitable for supplementary feeding only, not as a sole diet. Within wet food is designed to serve as a complete dietary staple if the owner chooses to feed it that way. The FEDIAF standard is the verification framework that makes that claim credible.

Ingredient Testing On Arrival: What Most Brands Skip

Standard practice in the pet food industry is to test the finished product — taking a sample from the production line and confirming it meets declared values. Within does this. But the process starts earlier.

Ingredients are tested on arrival at the manufacturing facility, before they enter production. This matters because:

  • Raw ingredient quality is variable — supplier-to-supplier and batch-to-batch
  • Ingredient contamination (mycotoxins, heavy metals, undeclared species) is most cost-effectively caught at the point of intake, before it reaches the mixing stage
  • Early testing allows rejection of non-compliant batches without the loss of a full production run
  • Third-party laboratory analysis provides an independent check, not just the supplier's own certificate of analysis

This approach adds cost and time to the production process. It also adds a meaningful layer of quality assurance that most mid-market brands — and some premium ones — do not apply.

Finished product testing is then conducted by independent third-party laboratories to confirm that analytical constituents match declared values on packaging. The results are on record, batch by batch.

Supplement Chews: Active Ingredients, Verified Dosing

Within supplement chews are available in four formulations: Calming, Probiotic, Dental, and Joint Support. Each contains FormulaBiotics™ as a baseline, with additional active ingredients specific to the intended function.

Joint Support chews contain Kynosil® — a clinically studied ingredient combining glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), and Yucca extract. These compounds support cartilage structure, joint mobility, and reduction of oxidative stress in joint tissue. Kynosil® is sourced from APR Pharma and represents one of the most substantiated joint support ingredients available in the pet supplement category.

Probiotic chews deliver live gut flora stabilisers — Bacillus velezensis DSM 15544 at 4b1820 1×10⁸ CFU/kg — to support the microbiome directly alongside the prebiotic and postbiotic components of FormulaBiotics™.

Calming chews contain active ingredients targeting the nervous system response to stress — supporting a calm disposition without sedation.

Dental chews are formulated to support oral hygiene — targeting plaque and tartar build-up, and freshening breath through active ingredient action rather than masking alone.

All supplement chews contain 120 chews per 360g tub. Dosing is based on dog weight and is specified on the product label and feeding guide. Dosing must not be adjusted based on perceived need — the active ingredient levels are calculated for the specified dose. Overfeeding does not increase benefit and may compromise safety.

Ethical Sourcing & Sustainability

Within's sourcing requirements extend beyond nutrition and food safety. Every supplier in the supply chain is expected to meet animal welfare benchmarks appropriate to their category. For meat and fish ingredients, this means sourcing from suppliers who can demonstrate responsible farming, fishing, or rearing practices.

Packaging is designed with sustainability as a consideration from the outset:

  • Wet food trays are recyclable — designed to be placed in standard household recycling streams after use
  • Dry food bags are paper-based — printed in the UK, and designed for paper recycling
  • Supplement tubs are rigid plastic — designed for longevity of product integrity, with recyclable material specification

Within's UK manufacturing base also contributes to a shorter supply chain for the UK market — meaning reduced transport distances and associated emissions compared to products manufactured in mainland Europe or Asia and shipped to the UK.

This is not the primary driver of the sourcing and manufacturing model — quality and compliance are — but it is a genuine secondary benefit.

Why This Standard Exists

The UK pet food market is large, competitive, and broadly unregulated in terms of premium positioning. Any brand can use the word "premium." Any brand can print "natural" on the label. There is no standard definition that governs those terms.

BRC certification is audited. FEDIAF compliance is verified against published standards. Vet approval through a documented clinical framework is traceable. Ingredient testing on arrival is either done or it isn't. Named whole meat either appears on the label or it doesn't.

The Within standard exists because these things are not universal in the market — and they should be. The intention was never to make the most expensive dog food. It was to make the most credible one. Science-backed, independently verified, and transparent at every stage.

That's the standard. It applies to every product, in every format, across the whole range.

Got a question? Let’s get into it.

From FormulaBiotics™ to feeding and supplements — here’s what you need to know.
What does FormulaBiotics™ actually do?

FormulaBiotics™ is Within's proprietary nutritional complex, included in every product across the range. It contains four active components: prebiotics, postbiotics, antioxidants, and a full vitamins and minerals profile. These work together to support gut microbiome balance, immune function, and long-term vitality. The gut microbiome is the foundation of a dog's immune system. Supporting it consistently, through daily nutrition, is the most effective way to support whole-body health over time.

Is Within suitable for puppies?

Within offers a dedicated puppy dry food: Complete & Balanced Chicken Dry Food 2kg, specifically formulated for puppies. It carries FormulaBiotics™ and is produced to the same BRC-certified manufacturing standards as the adult range.

Within's wet food and adult and senior dry food are formulated for dogs from 12 months and above. We do not recommend feeding adult-formulated food as the sole diet for younger dogs, as nutritional requirements during growth differ significantly from those of adult dogs, particularly for protein, calcium, and phosphorus ratios.

Within supplement chews are suitable for dogs from 12 weeks of age. Dosing is based on body weight and is specified on the product label. All four formulations (Calming, Probiotic, Dental, and Joint Support) can be introduced from 12 weeks alongside your puppy's existing diet.

If you are feeding the Within puppy dry food, the supplement chews can be used alongside it from 12 weeks. Check the feeding guide on each supplement product page for the correct daily amount based on your dog's weight.

Can I mix wet and dry Within food together?

Yes, and we actively support it. Mixed feeding combines the hydration benefits of wet food with the convenience and dental benefits of dry kibble. Within wet food and dry food are both nutritionally complete, so they can be combined in any ratio. Our mixed feeding guide is available on each product page and as a standalone guide on site. It covers recommended daily amounts by dog weight, including portion adjustments when mixing.

How do I transition my dog to Within?

Introduce Within gradually over 7 to 10 days. Start by replacing 25% of the current food with Within, increasing every two to three days. A gradual transition allows the gut microbiome time to adjust to the new formulation and significantly reduces the risk of loose stools or digestive upset during the changeover. Dogs with sensitive stomachs or existing digestive conditions may benefit from a slower 14-day transition.

Are WITHIN products grain free?

Within wet food is grain free. Within dry food uses whole oats as the primary carbohydrate source. Oats are a lower glycaemic index grain with good digestibility in dogs, a deliberate choice that differs from corn or wheat-based kibble. The dry food is not grain free, and this is clearly declared on the label. If your dog has a confirmed oat sensitivity, the wet food range is suitable as a grain free complete diet.

What is BRC certification and why does it matter?

BRC (British Retail Consortium) Global Standards is one of the world's most rigorous food safety and quality certification frameworks. All Within products are manufactured in BRC-certified facilities in the UK. This means our production sites are subject to regular independent audits, full batch traceability, documented HACCP controls, and ongoing quality management system requirements. BRC certification is not self-declared; it is awarded and renewed through third-party assessment.
