Sustainability is one of those words that has been used so often and so loosely that it has started to lose meaning. Every brand claims to care about it. Not every brand can tell you specifically what they are doing about it.
At WITHIN, sustainability is not a separate consideration from making good dog food. It is part of the same decision-making process, from how we source our ingredients, to how we power our factory, to how we think about the packaging your dog's food arrives in. Here is what that looks like in practice.
Made in the UK: why it matters for sustainability
WITHIN is manufactured in the UK, in a BRCGS-certified factory. That is not just a quality credential. It is a supply chain decision with direct sustainability implications.
UK manufacturing means a significantly shorter supply chain than brands importing finished products from overseas. Shorter supply chains mean fewer food miles, less refrigerated transport, lower logistics emissions, and far greater traceability over exactly how and where a product is made. When something goes into a WITHIN tray or bag, we know where it came from and how it got there.
Our factory uses green energy. We actively work to reduce waste at every stage of production. These are not aspirational commitments for a future date. They are part of how we operate now.
Ingredient sourcing: short supply chains and responsible standards
Sustainability starts with ingredients, and the choices made about what goes into a recipe have consequences that extend well beyond nutrition.
All of the chicken we use is freshly prepared, giving us excellent traceability and a short supply chain. We know exactly where our primary protein comes from, and the environmental cost of getting it to our factory is substantially lower than longer, more complex supply routes.
This is also part of why chicken appears as a base ingredient across our wet food recipes. Combining chicken with other meat or fish sources like turkey and salmon across our range allows us to provide a broader and more balanced amino acid profile than a single protein source alone could achieve, while making efficient use of high-quality animal ingredients. For the vast majority of healthy dogs, feeding a variety of animal proteins is nutritionally beneficial and reflects the diversity of ingredients found in many high-quality complete diets.
Every supplier we work with is evaluated against both welfare and sustainability benchmarks. We source responsibly and we hold our partners to the same standards we hold ourselves. That is not a claim we make lightly. It is a requirement of working with us.
Packaging: recyclable across the range
Our packaging is recyclable where possible. Every wet food tray, every dry food bag and every supplement chew tub.
This matters because pet food packaging is a significant contributor to plastic waste, and the industry as a whole has a long way to go. The pouches used by many wet food brands are not recyclable and go directly to landfill. WITHIN trays go in the recycling.
Packaging materials are assessed for safety, durability and suitability at every stage of product development, with consideration given to sustainability and recyclability as a standard part of that process, not a box-ticking afterthought. Clear storage instructions are provided so that owners can store food correctly, extending shelf life and reducing household waste.
Animal welfare as part of the approval framework
WITHIN's vet approval framework, reviewed by Dr Jason Aldiss BEM BVSc MRCVS, considers both animal welfare and sustainability as standard criteria alongside nutritional and manufacturing standards. That means every recipe is evaluated not just on what is in it, but on how the ingredients were sourced and whether the suppliers involved meet the welfare and sustainability benchmarks we require.
Ingredients are sourced from suppliers committed to high animal welfare standards. Responsible sourcing practices are considered throughout the supply chain. Sustainability initiatives are reviewed where applicable. These are the commitments that sit behind the vet-approved label, not just the nutritional profile of the recipe.
Sustainability and nutrition: two sides of the same decision
The most sustainable dog food is one that does not compromise on nutrition. A dog who is not thriving on their food will need more of it, or additional supplements, or more frequent vet visits. Getting the nutrition right the first time, with ingredients that are high quality, well-sourced and well-formulated, is itself a sustainability outcome.
FormulaBiotics™, the postbiotic blend in every WITHIN product, is part of this logic. A well-supported gut microbiome improves how efficiently a dog absorbs nutrients from their food. Better absorption means less waste, better outcomes, and a dog who is genuinely thriving on what they are eating rather than simply consuming it.
WITHIN is a young brand with an exciting journey ahead of us. The decisions we have made from day one, about where we manufacture, how we source, what we put in our packaging and who we partner with, are decisions made with both nutrition and responsibility in mind. That is what made sustainably in the UK means to us.
